Barwin are delighted to have been appointed on three seperate phases of works at Springfield Hospital, now known as The 1840, St George Gardens, in Tooting, West London. The project has won several awards, including ‘Best Refurbishment Project’ at The Housebuilder Awards 2023. The Grade II listed building has an interesting history, previously being an asylum, however now being converted into luxury apartments by our client.
This conversion required the building to have extensive restoration works carried out, to repair and enhance the building, maintaining its grandeur and history. Barwin was selected to complete phases 1 2 and 3, spanning more than 6 years, and the project is still currently ongoing.
Scope of works:
- Moulded stone repairs to cornice, quoins, string, roll mould, copings
- Stone indent repairs to string & band courses, roll moulds & plinths
- Reforming stone cornices
- Brick repairs & replacements
- Taking down and re-building gables, crenelations, chimney stacks & arches
- Rake out & re-pointing facades to match existing
- Cleaning to facades (DOFF, chemical and TORC)
- Paint stripping
- Installing new stone to windows & doors including, mullions, transoms, cills, heads, thresholds & surrounds
- Re-building garden walls, terrace walls & sleeper walls
- New internal & external brickwork (bricking up door openings, enlarging windows, forming door openings)
